Role: Associate Director
Office location: Tunbridge Wells
Joined the team: July 2017
I got to know the team over the years and liked Base’s ethos and the direction in which it was heading. Having had a number of conversations with Duncan, Base CEO and Danny, Base MD, it was evident that the quality of work and the aspirations they had for the company were what I wanted to be a part of.
So when I got offered the opportunity to join the team it felt like the right move.
Base has afforded me the responsibility and opportunity to partake in the growth and expansion of the Company, particularly with the investment in the Tunbridge Wells office.
What is your favourite thing about working at Base?
Base has a great team of people with exceptional skills and experiences. The support we give each other enables us to perform the competencies of being a Quantity Surveyor. The ethos of Base requires us to deliver for our clients but also recognises and encourages diversity and aspirational goals. It’s a great place to develop a career.
What were you doing previously?
I was successfully running my own consultancy, predominantly working for main contractors on highways and civil engineering projects. As well as working on a number of bespoke building and Heritage projects, assisting with the project management.
What would you consider to be your area of expertise?
I began my career in highways and civil engineering but now I have worked on residential, hotels, marine, refurbishments. I’m pleased to be able to say that I can work across most sectors and apply my experience.
What do you feel you bring to Base?
I like to think I’m approachable and supportive and always happy to listen and help others.
I’m fairly strong willed when it comes to doing things right or using my previous experience to assist in finding resolutions. It’s a symptom of being passionate about my job and caring about the company I work for.
Technology is also a keen interest of mine, in both day to day activities and the larger opportunities for the industry. I’m currently spending time researching and learning about how it will play its part in construction but also how it will affect the role of the QS and how we do things at Base.
What are your career aspirations for the future?
Within 5 years I’d like to be pushing for Director. I would like to see the Tunbridge Wells office continuing to grow whilst ensuring that we carry on being one team regardless of the office we are located at.
I also see myself striking a balance between my practical role as a Quantity Surveyor, whilst assisting in growing the business, the systems and supporting the work on our brand.
Do you have an accomplishment that has shaped your career?
Running my own consultancy. It was a big deal for me. To hand in your notice and have your last pay-packet is scary. It was a huge learning exercise and I was proud of what I achieved during that time.
In addition to that I can’t forget the accomplishment of passing my APC. I was prepared for the effort that would be required but perhaps not the pressure I put on myself. Succeeding with the assessment was a big milestone for me and was important as it had been my colleagues at Base who had given me the confidence to go for it.
What do you feel like you learned from that?
Whilst working for myself, I learned not to be fearful and to trust my judgement and values. It made me a stronger professional.
Being able to have that experience and now to be able to incorporate it into a team environment has been a further learning but its been so valuable to me and hopefully Base too.
What would be your biggest piece of advice to those starting in the industry today?
Make the most of opportunities you are given and be brave because they set you up and enable you to be more valuable.
I’m really happy to be able to look at my career so far and feel I have worked hard and said ‘yes’ to projects or jobs or starting a business.
