Role: Office Administrator
Office location: Aldwych, London
Joined the team: January 2017
I got to know Duncan whilst working in the building reception of Aldwych House. He was kind enough to invite me to the Christmas parties in the years prior to starting at Base, so I got to know both him and the existing staff and loved the family feel of the company. Eventually, I got talking to Duncan about the possibility of joining the team and, at the end of 2016, a role opened up for me.
What does your role entail?
Everything from general filing and running the London office to IT; assisting the team with anything that I can.
What were you doing prior to joining Base?
I worked as a building receptionist at offices across London, and then at Aldwych House, learning about building management.
What skills and qualities do you feel you bring to Base?
I have a hands-on attitude and am happy to help with any issues that arise in the day-to-day running of the office. I have a good, self-taught understanding of IT which allows me to assist our team with equipment queries in-house or remotely.
What are your career aspirations for the future?
I am really content with my work and home life, but if I have to answer I would say that I will continue to find ways to work more efficiently and support the whole Base team, which is growing rapidly. Over the past 6 months we have employed quite a few new members of staff and it’s been great to get more involved with their onboarding process, involving IT and intranet setup, inductions, and other general tasks.
What was your biggest non-career-based accomplishment and why was it important to you?
I was fortunate enough to have been able to purchase a property during what was a very difficult time in my life due to illness, and now have the opportunity to buy a second.
As my role is based in admin support, not having experience in the industry is not really an issue. However, working with the teams across the expert witness and quantity surveying streams of the business has allowed me to pick up a bit of knowledge across the business.
What is your favourite and least favourite part of your role?
My favourite part is being able to help people with their queries, resolving their issues so that they can continue with their work as soon as possible. My least favourite part is probably chasing people for their timesheets and expense receipts as it makes me feel a bit of a pest. However, as it helps the finance team to have all the correct information on time, it’s for a good cause!
What motivates you?
The challenge of something new is always a good motivation. The varying nature of my role provides a lot of challenges, some that I have not faced before.
Do you have any hobbies/interests?
I enjoy reading, watching TV/movies and there is nothing like the outdoors – when the weather is good!
How would your family and friends describe you?
Strong minded but loyal, and always there for support when needed.
